How To Get Your Concealed Carry License In Florida

Whether you’ve been a long-time gun owner or just purchased your first firearm, taking the steps toward getting your concealed carry may seem like a rather overwhelming task. There’s a lot of steps involved, which can discourage you from following through and receiving your concealed carry license—but it doesn’t have to be!

When it comes to concealed carry licenses, each state follows its own legislation and rules that you need to follow, so it’s essential that you closely follow Florida’s state laws. Florida operates as a shall-issue state, meaning that you’ll receive your license, should you provide the proper documentation and meet all eligibility requirements.

What Does Your Concealed Carry License Allow You To Carry?

With your concealed license, you will be allowed to carry a handgun, electric weapon, tear gas gun, billy clubs, and knives discreetly. This means that your weapon must be hidden at all times while on your person.

What Are The General CWL Requirements For Florida?

  • You must be 21 years of age or older.
  • You must be able to demonstrate competency with a firearm.
  • Unless you are serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces, you must currently reside in the United States and be a U.S. citizen or deemed a lawful permanent resident alien by Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service.
    • If you are serving overseas in the U.S. Armed Forces, submit a copy of your deployment documentation with your application. Those who are Resident Aliens must provide a valid Permanent Resident Alien card.

Note that there is an extensive list of items that may make you ineligible for a CWL:

  • You’re physically unable to handle a firearm safely.
  • You possess a felony conviction (unless civil and firearm rights have been restored by the convicting authority).
  • You have adjudication withheld or sentence suspended on a felony or misdemeanor crime of violence unless three years have elapsed since probation or other conditions set by the court have been fulfilled.
  • You possess a conviction for a misdemeanor crime of violence in the last three years.
  • You possess conviction for violation of controlled substance laws or multiple arrests for such offenses.
  • You have a record of drug or alcohol abuse.
  • You possess two or more DUI convictions within the previous three years.
  • You have been committed to a mental institution or adjudged incompetent or mentally defective.
  • You have failed to provide proof of proficiency with a firearm.
  • You have been issued a domestic violence injunction or an injunction against repeat violence that is currently in force.
  • You have renounced your U.S. citizenship.
  • You possess a dishonorable discharge from the armed forces.
  • You are a fugitive from justice.

Can You Buy a Gun From an Individual?

Now more than ever, there are questions and regulations about purchasing, selling, and carrying a gun. It can often be an overload of information and someone could easily miss some of the fine details that come with buying a gun. You shouldn’t be lost if you find yourself asking “can I buy a gun from an individual?”. While many people will often purchase a weapon from someone, there are some set rules and stipulations that gun enthusiasts should look for when doing this. A to Z Gun and Pawn has compiled some details to ensure the process goes smoothly and correctly.

First, let’s go over the steps that should take place before the transaction even begins.

Buyer’s Right

There are some important questions that should be covered before the consideration of purchasing a gun occurs. Do you have a license for a firearm? Are you or have you been a convicted felon? Can you legally purchase a firearm? These should all be covered before buying anything from an individual or even a certified gun dealer. Gun laws are all different depending on the state that you live in. Some states can fine up to $500 dollars and two years in prison for carrying a firearm with no permit.

If you’ve been convicted of domestic violence or a number of other crimes, you’ll be legally forbidden from buying or possessing a firearm or ammo. There are circumstances however where an individual can have their “civil rights restored” and may be allowed to possess and carry a firearm. Before purchasing a weapon anywhere, review the laws of your state to make sure it’s legal.

The Bill of Sale

No matter where or how the transaction occurs, it’s always important to have some form of receipt or documentation that the purchase has been made. While not a legal requirement, it’s always a good practice for the buyer and seller to have a copy of the transaction for their records. If the weapon that was sold or purchased is used in a crime, the records of the transaction will prove that it was sold or purchased not knowing the history of the weapon.

A bill of sale should include the names of both the buyer and seller and also include the make, model, and a serial number of the firearm.

Now, let’s see the important steps that should occur during the transaction.

ID and Firearm Permit

Even if you’re not the seller, get a picture of their ID and permit if they possess one. Make sure to print it later. This will ensure you have a paper trail and will be safe if any information comes out later about the weapon you’ve just purchased.

Serial Number

If possible, have the county or city law enforcement run a background check of the serial number on the weapon. This will make sure the weapon is legit and hasn’t been involved in a previous crime or stolen. Being caught with a stolen firearm can lead to tickets, court appearances, or even jail time. There is no reason to lose your firearm, money, and time for a weapon that you had no prior knowledge of.

From this article, you’ve probably already put the pieces together that, yes, it is perfectly legal to purchase a firearm from an individual. However, if not handled properly, it can lead to lots of legal trouble. To avoid this, it’s best to visit and reliable and trustworthy dealer

If you’re looking to purchase a firearm legally or want to inquire about a concealed carry permit, visit the A to Z Gun and Pawn Shop located in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Go to our contact page or call us at 954-941-1826 for more information.

Getting Ready For a Florida Concealed Weapons Class

The great Stan Lee once wrote, “With great power comes great responsibility”. Nowhere is this statement more real than owning and carrying a firearm.  Carrying a concealed weapon is a big responsibility. The state of Florida allows responsible citizens to carry a firearm for personal protection and safeguarding their loved ones from potential threats. There are some general eligibility criteria that all applicants need to fulfill to ensure that they qualify for a permit.

A clear background is not sufficient for getting a concealed weapon permit approval. All applicants need to undergo mandatory training for gaining hands-on experience. Because of this, A To Z Gunz and Pawn has designed a program to familiarize applicants with the safety rules of firearm handling that will allow them to obtain a concealed carry permit.

As proud members of the NRA, A to Z Guns & Pawn offers Florida Concealed Carry Classes and Gun Permits (CCW). Taught by NRA-certified instructors, you’ll learn everything you need to get your permit to carry a firearm in Florida. Your instructor will go over the following firearm safety tips that every person who owns and carry a gun should live by:

  • Know what’s behind your target
  • Don’t point your weapon at anything you don’t intend to shoot
  • Always treat your weapon as if it’s loaded, meaning imagine there’s a round in the chamber and it’s on fire
  • Don’t put your finger in the trigger guard unless you’re aiming to shoot
  • Always keep your weapon steady and downrange
  • Don’t joke or jester with your weapon, because guns aren’t toys

What kind of guns do pawn shops buy?

Are you looking to sell your gun but don’t know where to turn? Consider selling to a Pawn Shop such as A to Z Guns & Pawn. We buy and sell all makes and models of firearms including handguns and long guns. We buy brands such as Smith & Wesson, Glock, Heckler & Koch, Colt, and Sig Sauer to name a few.

Any quality handgun or rifle that’s in good condition and its mechanics still function properly can be pawned or sold at most pawn shops. A gun that’s “like new” will be even more valuable; and even better if you have an antique rifle, like from the Civil War. Regardless, expect that they’ll want to vet and check your antique gun to make sure it’s authentic – while you might know the history, a pawnbroker will still go through the standard process of precautions.

How should I prepare my gun?

For starters, you’ll want to bring your gun secure in its locked case – and entirely unloaded. Like any responsible owner, you and the pawnbroker will want to exercise best firearms handling standards. This means treating the gun as if it’s loaded. You’ll also need to bring your gun license. They will ask to make a copy to keep on file so they can run a background check if necessary.

If you do choose to conduct a gun transaction with a pawnshop, do the things on the following list first.

  • Determine if the pawnshop buys and sells guns. Some don’t work with guns.
  • Come prepared with the gun’s maker, model, caliber, any mods, plus your driver’s license, any gun licenses / concealed carry permit, any gun safety certificates, and proof of residence.
  • Determine the value of your gun before you take it to a pawn shop.
  • Bring the gun unloaded in a locked case to be examined by the shop.

Pawn shops, like a bank, are operating a business, and they will charge fees for loan services. Also, each shop may have a particular interest in which inventory they accept. Not every pawn shop allows guns, know beforehand if a store accepts your item.

Can I Pawn a Used Gun that’s Been Gifted to Me?

If you have been given a used gun from a friend or family member, there is a good chance this gun is still registered in the original owner’s name.

Before accepting a gun as a gift, you want to ask to see the original paperwork. This will show you if that person indeed owned that gun, or if you are inheriting a gun that might have been stolen. The latter is obviously a large concern.

You do not want to be in possession of a stolen gun. If you find that either of the aforementioned scenarios is true, return the gun back to the person who gifted it to you, and let them know your concern.

Is there a Waiting period to Buy A gun from a Pawn Shop?

There is a waiting period of three days, excluding weekends and state holidays, between the purchase and delivery of all firearms. Individual counties and cities have the authority to enact local ordinances extending the waiting period to as much as five days. Please consult local ordinances for more detailed information.

What is a Pawn Loan?

Pawn shops have become increasingly popular in past years. They’ve become a common source for individuals to visit when they need to quickly get rid of an item to receive payment upfront as opposed to waiting to sell an item online. But for many who don’t really visit pawn shops as much as other individuals do, the functions of a pawn shop can seem quite confusing, especially when it comes to a pawn loan itself.

If you’re one of many who don’t really understand what a pawn loan is or how it works, then continue reading below.

What is a Pawn Loan?

A pawn loan is a collateral-based loan. What this means is that the loan is secured by something of value.

When you take something in you own and the pawnbroker is interested, he or she will offer you a loan. Generally, you pledge property as collateral and in return, you’re lent money.

The pawnbroker then keeps your item until you decide to repay the loan. If you, however, choose to not redeem your collateral, there’s no credit consequence to the borrowers and the items are sold at a value price to retail customers.

How Does a Pawn Loan Work?

Pawn is essentially another word for a collateral loan. Your pawnbroker will lend money on items of value that range from gold and diamonds to electronics and standard household items. Some pawn shops specialize in certain items and can often determine the best value for a specific object you have. Here at A to Z Guns and Pawn, we specialize in the dealings of firearms and can easily determine the value of your gun or other similar items.

When you pay back the loan, your merchandise is returned to you. You may also choose to surrender your collateral as payment in full.

Pawn Shop Vs eBay

After assessing your belongings, you’ve come to decide that you have way too much stuff in your possession. You decide to sell them but now you’re troubled in deciding which is better: selling them on eBay or selling them to a pawn shop. The former is the most widely popular choice, so it makes sense to go with that one, right? Well, as it turns out, selling your items on eBay ain’t all that it’s cracked up to be. In fact, selling your items to a pawn shop will prove to be a much more effective and beneficial way to get rid of old junk that you don’t want anymore.

Below are 5 reasons why you should choose pawn shops over eBay.

Why Selling Your Items to a Pawn Shop is Better Than eBay

1.No Shipping

Selling your items to a pawn shop, such as A to Z Guns and Pawn will save you a lot of time. Instead of going through the process of shipping a package (going to the post office, waiting in line, buying stamps, and dealing with the buyer’s delivery complaints) just take a visit to your local pawn shop and deal with fewer hassles.

Just not having to fret or work over shipping your items alone is enough to make pawn shops a better choice for individuals looking to sell their goods.

2. Instant Cash

If you’re auctioning your item, it can take days or even weeks for it to be completed. As a result of this, you’re going to have to wait for quite a while before you finally get your money on eBay.

You want your money now, and you can get it by visiting your local pawnshop. When you sell your items to a pawn shop, you won’t have to wait weeks for your money to finally arrive. In fact, the most you’ll have to wait for is probably just a few minutes trying to strike a deal with the pawn shop employee.

3. Option to Pawn

Perhaps maybe you’re not ready to sell your items, but you still need the money right away. Pawn shops, as their names imply, offer customers the opportunity to pawn their items if they need to. What this allows is for you to receive a loan that’s equivalent to the value of the item in exchange for giving the pawn shops the item as collateral. And whenever you wish to regain your item, all you need to do is repay the pawn shop with a payment equal to the loan plus interest.

4. No Chance of Scams

While eBay is a widely popular website, scams are unfortunately still a common issue on the platform.

It’s commonly believed that only buyers can get scammed. However, eBay sellers can also get scammed, too. Scammers may, for instance, only agree to pay for a high amount on an item through other methods that aren’t on the eBay platform. As a result of this, they’ll end up sending a fake check that will bounce days later after you’ve already shipped the item.

This is, of course, one of the most popular scamming tactics out of many. By selling your items to a trusted pawn shop, you won’t have to worry about such scams occurring. You’ll be doing business with certified professionals that you’ll see in person as opposed to random strangers online.

If you happen to be in the Broward County area, you’ll be more than happy to know that A to Z Guns and Pawn is located close by. They’re South Florida’s most reliable pawn shop and they’ll offer you a good price for any of your unwanted items that you won’t find anywhere else.

5. No Additional Fees

eBay will always charge fees from 3% to 10% of the sale price. Such a fee will vary depending on the type of item you’re selling. By taking your items to a pawn shop, you’ll be able to receive more money.

There’s no reason you should waste your money paying eBay’s fees when there are options not to.

The Benefits of Gun Buying From Pawn Shops

When you go out to purchase an item, typically, you’re looking for something that is brand new. Items such as mattresses or even undergarments are stuff that you would never want to buy used. You want them fresh and unopened in order to give you the absolute best performance that you can’t get from used items. However, in other cases, such as the purchase of used guns, you’ll find that there are many benefits.  In fact, buying a used gun, especially from a pawn shop, might prove to be more beneficial as opposed to buying a new gun by itself. And if you’re left wondering how that is so, then continue reading below to see the benefits of buying a used gun from a pawn shop. And then make your way to A to Z Guns and Pawn to purchase one for yourself.

The Benefits of Buying a Gun From a Pawn Shop

While it may seem untrue at first, there are actually many more benefits to purchasing a used gun as opposed to buying a new one. And if you don’t believe us, then take a look below at what advantages you can gain from buying a used gun at a pawn shop.

Save money

New firearms – especially ones from top gun brands – are offered at a higher price compared to used guns. And this is one factor you need to keep in mind as you’re researching for the best places to buy a gun. But for the ultimate cost-effective purchase, it’s always best that you visit a pawn shop. Pawn shop guns are usually at a price that’s 20%-25% lower than what a new gun is offered at. And if a pawn shop hasn’t moved certain guns in a while, then you might even find the one you’re looking for marked down.

Get Familiar With The Gun Before Purchase

Of course, you’re always given the option to inspect a new gun. But because it is a new gun, the sales rep will likely usher you to purchase it immediately. But at a pawn shop, the store employees will always expect potential customers to thoroughly inspect a gun to ensure perfection. And if you’re an experienced gun owner, you can even ask for permission to disassemble a gun that you’ve been eyeing at your local pawn shop.

Experienced & Knowledgeable Staff

Because they themselves aren’t exactly dubbed as gun shops, pawn shop owners will have plenty of reasons to ensure that the guns they sell are safe. If they weren’t safe, they would face a number of liability issues and their reputation would be damaged severely. And it’s because of this that pawn shop owners will always hire staff members that are well-experienced and knowledgeable about guns. In a way, visiting a pawn shop to inquire about a firearm is much similar to going to an official gun store to do the same thing. Both staff members of each facility know many things about firearms and can assist you.

You Can Find Rare Firearms

Gun shows and the internet can especially show you rare and collectible guns that would interest you. But for the ultimate convenience, you can visit a pawn shop instead. If you have a local pawn shop nearby then you’ll want to familiarize yourself with it and the staff inside. By familiarizing yourself with the staff, they can contact you of new rare and collectible firearms that they’ve just received in their possession.

Used Quality Doesn’t Mean Bad Quality

A used item usually connotates with one that has degraded in quality, and that same principle can definitely apply to guns. But that doesn’t mean all used guns have lost their quality. In fact, you’ll find that most pawn shops keep their guns in near-perfect condition. When you’re visiting a pawn shop, ensure you’re visiting one that is reputable – such as A to Z Guns and Pawn. You wouldn’t want to purchase a used gun from a shop that has questionable quality.

Get Your Quality Used Gun from A to Z Guns & Pawn

When you realize that the advantages of purchasing a used gun outweigh that of purchasing a new one, you’ll want to visit a reputable pawn shop that is well-experienced in the transaction of firearms. And there is no better place to visit than A to Z Guns and Pawn in Deerfield Beach. We’ve served the South Florida area for many years and we’re more than confident that when you choose us, you’ll be satisfied with your used gun purchase. For any inquiries, you may call us at 954-941-1826 or visit our contact page.

How to Pawn a Gun

Pawning your possessions can be a simple task sometimes. But depending on certain items, there’s actually a lot of factors you have to keep in mind when you’re intending to pawn them. And when it comes to a gun, you have to especially be mindful of the procedure involved. Learning how to pawn a gun isn’t difficult, but it can be somewhat of a tedious process that you always need to follow. And when you’re pawning or selling a gun, it’s important to keep the legal aspects in mind in order for the gun to be pawned or sold successfully. Continue reading below so that you can learn how to pawn a gun properly with no hassle whatsoever.

The Legal Aspect

The most important thing to keep in mind when pawning a gun is the legal issues that surround the procedure. There are many laws concerning firearms and some of them definitely apply to pawning or selling them at your local pawnshop. Below are some things to keep in mind.

Only Certain Pawn Shops Permitted by The Law Can Deal in Firearms

When you do decide to pawn or sell your gun(s), one of the first things you need to look into is finding a pawnshop that is allowed by the law to deal with transactions of firearms.

Pawnshops such as A to Z Guns and Pawn in Pompano Beach are permitted to deal with firearms because they follow gun regulations set by the federal government. More so, they also abide by state regulatory laws regarding background checks before selling a gun and also the return of a gun to the owner once a pawn loan is done.

Lastly, you must also know that you’re dealing with a reputable pawnshop. Pawnshops will have to share information with the local legal authorities if the need arises and they’ll disallow dealings in guns with any minors.

A Gun Registered in Your Name Vs a Gun That Isn’t

If the gun you intend on pawning is registered in your name, then it should be somewhat smooth sailing in terms of pawning or selling the firearm. But if the gun isn’t registered in your name, it can cause problems for you.

If the gun you bring into the pawnshop has been reported stolen, then the shop owner or other personnel will be required to report your attempt to make a transaction. The information will be reported to local authorities and you will get into trouble and possibly get arrested.

An indication that the gun you have is stolen is if it’s registered to a name that is different than what appears on your ID. When you go to a pawnshop, the person behind the counter will ask for your ID upfront, so be prepared to carry it with you.

Pawning a Used Gun That Was Gifted to You

If you have recently been gifted with a used gun, there is a chance that the weapon is still registered in the original owner’s name. When a gun is given to you as a gift, make sure you ask about the original paperwork of the gun. The paperwork will reveal if the gun you’re receiving is still owned by the original owner or if it’s stolen. The latter is, obviously, a large concern.

If the gun you were given is stolen, bring it to the attention of the person who gifted it to you or report it immediately to local authorities.

How to Prepare The Gun

Of course, to ensure you’re receiving the best value for your gun, you want to make sure the firearm is completely and properly cleaned.

Other than that, before you leave the house and to the pawnshop, keep the gun secured in a locked case and entirely unloaded. Like any responsible owner, you’ll want to exercise the best firearm handling standards (i.e. handle the gun as if it were loaded) and make sure you bring your gun license. They will ask to make a copy to keep on file so they can run a background check if necessary.
