What’s Considered an Antique?

Selling your items to a pawn shop is one of the easiest ways for you to make money. Especially when you have an antique item that you don’t want to keep anymore. But often, it can be troubling to know if that special item that was handed down to you by your grandfather is actually an antique or not. And if you’re not entirely sure if it is and/or if it’s actually worth something, then continue reading below. A to Z Guns and Pawn possesses a vast assortment of antiques in their inventory. And because of this, they’re well-aware and knowledgeable about what makes an item an antique.

What is Considered an Antique?

First, let us talk about age.

If your item is outdated (as in, it’s no longer popularly in use), then it may likely qualify as an antique. Antiques are items that are perceived to have historical value due to their significance and/or aesthetic. So the older they are, the more value they have. However, these defined traits, in some ways, leaves ambiguity as to what could actually be dubbed as an antique.

The best way to explain this is through an example: typewriters!

Typewriters are items that certainly have some historical significance and are no longer popularly used. And if you have one in your possession, then it may be an antique, correct? Maybe, maybe not.

This is where your investigative skills need to come in. You’ll need to look into the brand of the typewriter, its manufacturing date and/or serial number (if it has one), how many were sold, etc. While your typewriter might fit the description of an antique, it may not necessarily be dubbed as an antique. And this is mainly due to the fact that it may not have been as significant as you perceive it to be. Moreover, it might not be old enough to become an antique as 100 years old is often the standard.

You could take two typewriters that were fabricated at the same time, but only one might be worth something more than the other.  Their value is often contributed by what company made them and how many of them were in stock. More so, their value could also be contributed by their ownership. If one of them was in possession by a WWII veteran who documented battles as opposed to just an average Joe, then the former would be more valuable and an antique (if you have those documents in your possession from WWII, then it can possibly be even more valuable!).

My Item is Less Than a 100 Years Old. I Guess it’s Not an Antique

Not necessarily.

While the common criteria are that it has to be older than 100 years old, some pawn shop dealers have been lowering the standard to 50 years. This is so that they can resell your items under the brand of “antiques” and generate tremendous revenue.

In today’s modern age, more and more people are choosing to become collectors, especially when it comes to antique items. Such individuals are recognizing how much worth and value these items hold. And even if these items aren’t 100 years old now, they will become 100 years old at some point, making such items highly praised for their investment potential.
